Arnit's confidence boost

Success for Support Worker scheme

A Dagenham teenager has enjoyed a massive confidence boost thanks to our Support Worker scheme, which works on a one to one basis with adults and young people and children from the age of 8 and upwards.

Arnit Gashi’s mum Anita referred him to the Sycamore Trust in December 2017 in order for him to gain confidence and take part in leisure activities outside of the family home, independent of family support. He began working with support worker Ben in February this year.  They meet twice a week and have enjoyed activities such as walking in the park, cinema outings and shopping trips.

Thanks to Ben’s support, Arnit has increased his independence and has now been able to make decisions prior to Ben’s visits in order to plan what he would like them to do together. He has also gained confidence in using money when out and is learning to route plan. His outdoor leisure activity has increased, which has improved his general health and wellbeing.

The Trust’s Support Workers are trained to work with people with Autism on a one-to-one basis, enabling them to access social activities, education settings, travel on public transport or simply visit the local shops.

Mum Anita said; “Arnit really enjoys spending time with Ben. They do a variety of activities together and Arnit feels that he has a friend. Arnit has enjoyed going to the cinema compared to previously, as Ben finds interesting movies to watch. Ben has also encouraged him to take on different outings that are active and to explore nature. Arnit is encouraged to have a say and use money and initiative when going out, making him more independent from parental supervision.”  Arnit said: “I really enjoy my time with Ben and I look forward to our outings and activities together.”

There are many different situations where a Support Worker can be beneficial to a youngster with ASD.  It may be that the young person wants to access work or volunteering opportunities, or that they need support when socialising. Having a trusted Support Worker by their side can relieve the anxiety that could be experienced in these situations.  This can increase independence, confidence and self-esteem.
