Could you be a Job Coach?

SPACE Project needs volunteers

It was a memorable occasion for the SPACE Project last Thursday as we collected the award for Community Involvement at the Barking & Dagenham Chamber of Commerce business awards, but no-one at the Sycamore Trust is sitting on their laurels.

In particular, the project is keen to recruit volunteers to help with job coaching.  The SPACE Project (Supporting People with Autism into Continued Employment) helps young people with ASD into employment and a vital part of the process involves the job coach volunteers.

Volunteer co-ordinator Kent Lowe explained “it’s the perfect role for a retired person.  Our candidates need help to prepare for interviews and to ensure that they are ready for work.  It’s during office hours and we pay expenses, so if there’s anyone out there willing to volunteer for a couple of hours a week, we’d love to hear from them.

The Space Project is funded by the Glyn Hopkin Charitable Foundation and has been able to help a number of young people with autism from the Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge areas into work.  At present only 16% of autistic adults are working and SPACE hopes to increase that figure.  If you would like to become a job coach volunteer, please call 020 8517 9317 or email volunteer@sycamoretrust.org.uk
