Nothing stops SWAP!

We may all be in lockdown at the moment but nothing stops our SWAP team from keeping in touch with their families. Last Friday, we held a virtual coffee morning for parents who have been on or are presently being supported by our Speak With A Picture programme.

SWAP, which is supported by BBC Children In Need uses an alternative communication system designed to provide individuals with the ability to share their own wants and needs. The aim of the programme is for children and their families in Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge to develop communication skills that can be widely used every day.

Under normal circumstances, our SWAP team would see the parents and the children almost every week, but at present it’s impossible to do so because of the government guidelines, so the next best thing was our virtual coffee morning, which was attended by many of our families. One of the ways that our project is unique is that it recognises that it’s not just the young people that need our support, it’s the parents too, so the video meeting was a vital tool to keep in touch and remind our families that we’re by their side on this journey.

We hope to arrange another virtual meeting before Christmas. Look out for details on our website and social media
