We returned to Raphael Park in Romford this week for our latest Walking Group expedition. Our last visit to Romford's best park was over three months ago, so we felt it was time we had another look!
As has so often been the case this summer, we were blessed with some good weather for the 3 mile ramble. As well as seeing the lake and gardens of the park we also took a short tour of the roads and houses built for the 1911 Exhibition.
It was the latest in our series of walking groups, and they are open to all. You don't have to be a regular walker, but it's a great way to get some exercise and fresh air. Walking and Cycling Grants London is a programme funded by Transport for London in partnership with The London Marathon Foundation and managed by the environmental regeneration charity Groundwork London.
The funding has enabled us to establish a walking club that has created support networks and friendship groups among parents and autistic adults. The walkers get out into their local community, exercise and also support each other with coping mechanisms and signpost each other to relevant local services. Walking clubs provide a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends, which can enhance social connections and combat loneliness, which is common among the autistic community.
Our next walk will take pace on Thursday 4th September in Valentines Park, Ilford. It will start at 11am and the route is just under 5km. If you'd like more information, simply drop a line to lynn.chapman@sycamoretrust.org.uk
