Supporting families in Barking & Dagenham

EPEC at the Sycamore Trust

It’s been a busy and rewarding few months for our EPEC (Empowering Parents Empowering Communities) parenting programmes here at the Sycamore Trust.

We’ve been delighted to deliver both the 8-week Being a Parent programme and the 10-week EPEC Autism programme to parents and carers across Barking and Dagenham. These courses provide practical, evidence-based strategies alongside supportive parenting skills, while also creating a valuable space for families to connect. Many parents tell us how much they appreciate meeting others who truly understand their experiences—sharing both the challenges and the “little wins” along the way.

A key part of what makes EPEC so special is that it’s delivered by trained parent volunteers. These incredible individuals generously give their time to support others, bringing not only the course materials but also their own lived experience. Over the past 10 weeks, we’ve also been excited to train four new parent group leaders, helping us grow and reach even more families in the future. Every one of our leaders has personal experience of autism and social communication differences, meaning they bring empathy, understanding, and genuine insight to every session.
