Art Attack!

Local artist looking for exhibition space

A young Autistic woman is looking for exhibition space in Romford to show off her e-Art this year. In the UK around 1 in 100 people are Autistic and Asperger syndrome is a mild form of Autism. People with Asperger's have social and communication skills difficulties and the condition can cause the person great difficulty in social situations and can lead to bullying and harassment.

Qualified kitchen assistant Opal 'Lulu' Cangil 23 of Romford has Asperger's that can restrict her communications skills making it hard for her to clearly transmit thoughts and feelings in real time. She also has dyslexia, a reading condition. By using her love of art and design, she used the 'strengths' of Asperger's and dyslexia to build up a series of detailed electronic artwork that she has transferred onto various objects like t-shirts, mugs, blankets and canvasses.

Opal explored the other side of her Aspergers, which is to think in visual images with a detail orientated meticulous eye and a way with colour and space to express her feelings as a therapeutic and empowering way to deal with what real life threw at her. She believes Art is a powerful way that Autistic people can express themselves and her natural fearlessness has led her to many interesting avenues. She has exhibited at The Retailery Cafe in Romford, shown her work to large art publishers in Chelsea and Westminster, and she has even made posters for international drag artists and for Blu in the CBBC children's band "Andy and the Band".

Opal has also created a self-published book called Tom and Ruby's Adventure, a colouring book to share experiences of Autistic people in everyday situations. A percentage of the book sales will be given to the Sycamore Trust, her second home away from home. For any venues that would be happy to have Lulu's art displayed, including exhibition spaces, conference/convention rooms, Galleries, Museums, restaurants, beauty establishments, airports, interior design outlets and private clubs, please contact Steve Dixon at the Sycamore Trust on 020 8517 9317 or email marketing@sycamoretrust.org.uk

And it's not just us at Sycamore Trust that has noted Lulu's talent - she's also been featured in the Romford Recorder.  To read the story, click here; https://www.romfordrecorder.co.uk/news/romford-artist-searching-for-exhibition-space-1-6911645
