Let's get ready!

New programme starting soon

There’s an exciting new project coming to the Sycamore Trust this year and it’s aimed at young adults in Barking & Dagenham.

Now that the country is beginning to emerge from the lockdown, it’s time to launch our latest initiative, which is hoping to prepare young adults on the spectrum to get ready for work. The new programme is supported by LBBD thanks to funding from the National Community Infrastructure Levy, which provides grants for community projects that support the regeneration of the borough.

Thanks to that support, we are able to offer a special programme to help young adults to prepare for work, to access any help available in seeking employment and to practice key skills, such as CV writing and mock interviews. There is some concern that predictions of a rise in unemployment at the end of the furlough scheme will further disadvantage young people on the spectrum, so we are hoping we can help young adults to prepare for the challenges that they are likely to face once they enter the job market. We do not propose to replicate the function of Job Coaches or Job Centres, but we recognise that there is some preparation required to enable young adults on the spectrum to become ready for work.

The project is completely free of charge and available to high functioning young adults on the spectrum aged 18 to 25 (on 1st Jan 2021) living in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham. We envisage that it will eventually take place one afternoon per week at the Sycamore Trust premises in Dagenham, although initially it will be in the form of a Zoom meeting whilst the Covid-19 restrictions remain in place.

The project will take the form of a series of sessions lasting 90 mins to 2 hours, once per week for the remainder of this year. Subjects to be covered will include;

• Evaluating aspirations

• How to write a CV and/or a cover letter

• How to seek internships or voluntary work

• Where to look

• How to complete an application form

• Mock interviews
