Providing for the future

Important seminar on Wills & Power of Attorney to take place next month

Have you given any thought to what will happen to your children in the future?  One of the questions we’re often asked at the Sycamore Trust relates to what happens to young people on the spectrum needing care, once their parents or carers are unable to do so.

It’s a really important question and we’re pleased to announce that the first fund raising event with our new charity partners at Mullis & Peake will be a legal advice seminar, focusing on the vitally important issue of planning for care in the future, with particular emphasis on Wills, Trusts and Power of Attorney.

It’s a question that can be very hard to ask, but none of us are here for ever and every parent of a child on the spectrum is aware that there may be extra care and support needed for young people to maintain an independent lifestyle as they get older.

It’s actually relatively easy to set up a Trust and to nominate a responsible person to look after the affairs of someone on the spectrum, but it’s not widely known that parents lose legal rights over their children once they are 18, so it is very important to have the right framework in place to ensure a stable future.

We’re very fortunate that Samantha Hamilton, head of the Private Client Department at Mullis & Peake, will host a seminar on this very important subject on Wednesday 12th June at the Sycamore Trust UK premises in Dagenham.  The 90-minute evening will be split into two parts with Samantha outlining the importance of planning for the future and how to go about it in the first half, with a Q&A session in the second half.

Samantha joined Mullis & Peake in 2006 and acts as Deputy and Attorney for a large number of individuals, managing a wide range of issues including Lasting Powers of Attorney, Deputyships and other orders of the Court of Protection.  As head of the M&P Private Client department, she oversees the Probate, Wills and Court of Protection teams and specialises in acting for clients under Court of Protection orders

As autistic people age so too do their parents, and often this means support responsibilities are passed on to siblings and other family members, but by planning well in advance you can help them prepare for future changes such as financial planning, health & social planning and nominating an advocate.

The seminar on 12th June will begin at 7pm and will be admission by ticket only.  Tickets will cost £10, with Sycamore Trust UK members paying just £5.

Payment can be made with a credit or debit card by calling the Sycamore Trust on 020 8517 9317.  Cheques are also accepted by post and cash will be accepted in person at 27/29 Woodward Road, Dagenham RM9 4SJ.
